UGC Gold Highlander Season 18
Week 4 Review and Week 5 Preview – Which Config Do We Exec?
by VoxDei and whymeo
We are officially past the halfway point of this season of UGC with Week 4 finished. There were actually a fair amount of close games.
Everything is now 100% functional with the stats page. You can check them out here! You can sort and add filters so you can see which Snipers or Demomen this week wreaked the most havoc on enemy players. The Player + Team stats are still being updated
Last week’s Rankings have been updated with the results from public poll. This weeks rankings are also live. You can also vote for this week’s rankings here! I’m looking for a new release cycle for the rankings since the public polls get sent out only a couple before the next set of matches.
Anyway, let’s get into this week’s review!
(Home team vs Visiting Team)
Final result: sJ won 4-1
meo’s Prediction: sJ wins (4-1)
VoxDei’s Prediction: Jeebus wins (4-2)
meo’s MVP: shea Jeebus
VoxDei’s MVP: crab_f sJ
Match length + Logs: 32:06 // http://logs.tf/1253343
meo’s Writeup: Carcin (, sJ) continues to impress on heavy, managing to somehow out frag both team’s snipers on goddamned Product. Even crazier than carcin’s amazing heavy play is shea on engineer though, who out fragged everyone on engineer and dropped over 300 dpm, while losing 4-1 no less. That’s right, an engineer and heavy out fragged the snipers on Product. In DynamoVic’s defense, he did suffer an absolutely infuriating 14 deaths to the enemy spy, Mr. DelDongo, and might have been able to topfrag if he wasn’t getting focused so hard, but it’s still rather crazy to see. Anyway, this match was clearly a rather easy one for sJ, with goldfish (, sJ) and evil (, sJ) doing as well as you’d expect them to on Product. (hint: that’s really, really well.)
VoxDei’s Writeup: sJ may have just faced their final challenge this season on the way to an 8-0, taking down Jeebus on Monday night. sJ absolutely pounded with frags and damage, leaving Jeebus to try to pick up the pieces of the game. The strength of sJ’s DM was just way too much to handle and they find themselves with their first loss of the season. It’s hard to single out a single player on sJ, because 5 managed to outfrag 8 of the players on the Jeebus side in this commanding victory. The only team left in sJ’s way is -quail noises- which should prove to be their biggest challenge, whenever that matchup should happen.
Final result: appel won 4-2
meo’s Prediction: appel wins (4-2)
VoxDei’s Prediction: -ts- wins (4-1)
meo’s MVP: SmileZ appel
VoxDei’s MVP: SmileZ appel
Match length + Logs: 36:36 // http://logs.tf/1253227
Cast: VoxDei + Vipa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jAS4yrqHoQ
meo’s Writeup: Kicking -ts- while they’re down, despite DrZoidy’s (, -ts-) best efforts to carry his team, appel takes a 4-2 win against -ts-. Personally, I think this matchup would have gone this way even if -ts- wasn’t coming off a loss and TMP hadn’t quit, but you never know. Afterall, it’s hard to deny that appel’s overall performance actually was rather lackluster in this match, with the very notable exception being SmileZ. SmileZ went absolutely insane in this match, with 51 frags in a mere 36 minutes plus 458 dpm. Along with SmileZ’s amazing performance is appel’s new demo, simon. Although simon’s DPM and kills were only average in this match, his main calling for appel has reportedly brought a breath of fresh air into appel and should help their team play more together going into the future. Furthermore, this is simon’s first time playing HL seriously for a team since season 13 for Team Wlly, so keep an eye out for simon to do better and better as the season goes on and he gets back into HL…
VoxDei’s Writeup: appel did it. They capitilize on a hurting -ts- team and walk away with a 4-2 victory, knocking the former #1 team down to a rough 2-2. -ts- had no answer for SmileZ who absolutely tore through the entire team, racking up 51 kills, 23 of which on the Demo and Sniper. SmileZ has definitely proven himself to be one of the top of the division, focusing down two of the strongest classes for any team on Product. Still, with -ts- now down their star Pyro, some are saying this may be a positive change, but clearly there is going to have to be a fair amount of rebuilding before they are able to compete again. Appel now sits with 3 straight wins and is vying to restore their glory from last seasons efforts.
Final result: ● won 4-2
meo’s Prediction: ● wins (4-1)
VoxDei’s Prediction: ● wins (4-1)
meo’s MVP: egwat No.2
VoxDei’s MVP: Coco ●
Match length + Logs: 38:58 // http://logs.tf/1253918
meo’s Writeup: It was rather shocking to see Shadowball drop two rounds to No.2, but it’s significantly less shocking once you see just how well egwat played. Dropping 56 frags and 511 dpm, out fragging even zoey (, ●) and lui (, ●) on Shadowball. Fortunately for Shadowball however, egwat, zuchima (, No.2) and jbird (No.2) were the only players on No.2 that were able to match up to Shadowball. Shadowball, on the other hand, had good performances all around – especially from zoey, lui and coco (, ●). Also of note is shiny mudkip (, ●) who managed to get 31 frags while only taking 5 deaths. That’s some good engineer play!
VoxDei’s Writeup: Shadowball take a 4-2 victory over No.2 here, but the real story is still on No.2 because of their determination to prove they are not a team pretending to be better than they are. Shadowball is still at the top of mid-Gold, but No.2 being able to pull a few rounds shows they cannot yet be counted out as a weak link in the division. egwat still put out massive numbers, but was overshadowed by Coco who put down 547DPM and 45 frags to lead his team to a victory. Shadowball, now 3-1 can really put themselves in a great position to earn a playoff berth, but they will have to continue to perform at such a level from here on out.
Final result: cNd won 4-0
meo’s Prediction: cNd wins (4-3)
VoxDei’s Prediction: SWAK wins (4-3)
meo’s MVP: eagle cNd
VoxDei’s MVP: eagle cNd
Match length + Logs: 21:19 // http://logs.tf/1253161
meo’s Writeup: I really didn’t expect this match to be a roll and it doesn’t seem that SWAK did either, as they have dropped out of the season in defeat after this loss. Eagle and flick just proved way too much for SWAK and no one on SWAK was able to put up much of a fight. It’s a shame to see SWAK quit, but it’s understandable after such a disappointing loss.
VoxDei’s Writeup: cNd are out for blood. After their disappointing 5-0 loss to Jeebus last week, they come back full force to annihilate SWAK on every level, earning 197 frags to SWAK’s 98. SWAK did not have an answer for eagle who put up 634 DPM and did almost a quarter of the damage for his entire team. flick also seems to show no rust moving back to Demo, with a 29-7 K-D and 501DPM. The unfortunate piece of the story is that SWAK has since dropped from the league after this loss, although only at a 2-2 record.
Final result: / ^ )> won 4-0
meo’s Prediction: / ^ )> wins (4-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: / ^ )> wins (4-0)
meo’s MVP: mae / ^ )>
VoxDei’s MVP: mae / ^ )>
Match length + Logs: 22:53 // http://logs.tf/1253167
meo’s Writeup: DOES IT wasn’t able to contest Quail Noises at all in this match and Quails walk away with a clean 4-0 win. As usual, everyone on Quails did quite well. Mae especially had a good game, dropping an insane 620 dpm and top fragging. Baited by Rhy was simply a warmup for Quails, as they work their way back up to the matchup with sJ…
VoxDei’s Writeup: Quail Noises are going to benefit from a mismatch against DOES IT, who has put together a decent season. Unfortunately for them, they got matched up against the under-ranked Quail Noises and lose 4-0 here. 5 players on Quails manage to outperform everyone on DOES IT and take the 4 round sweep in under 23 minutes. DOES IT is far from a bad team, just an unlucky one. They still sit an 2-2 and are not out of the game just yet.
Final result: ££ won 4-0
meo’s Prediction: N/A
VoxDei’s Prediction: ££ wins (4-2)
meo’s MVP: watterson ££
VoxDei’s MVP: watterson ££
Match length + Logs: 23:14 // http://logs.tf/1253382
meo’s Writeup: A quick 4-0 in Papa’s favor. Although kezia (, U$A), campy (, U$A) and moof (, U$A) all did very well on U$A’s side, watterson and the rest of Papa’s just proved too much on Product.
VoxDei’s Writeup: To be honest, I gave U$A a little bit of a chance here, but Papa’s Peddlers were out to prove that they are not a subpar team and sang a decisive 4-0 victory. Papa’s Peddlers surely benefitted from the DM-heavy Product, but it marks their first win since the first week of the season. U$A is now in a rough position, being 1-3, but they are still a solid roster looking to contend with the middle of Gold. Papa’s Peddlers do put themselves back into the upper tiers of Gold however with this win.
Final result: #BOTTOMGUN won 4-1
meo’s Prediction: #BOTTOMGUN wins (4-2)
VoxDei’s Prediction: N/A
meo’s MVP: JJSlim #BOTTOMGUN
VoxDei’s MVP: JJSlim #BOTTOMGUN
Cast: VoxDei + Mime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydS4VM8wJTM
Match length + Logs: 28:41 // http://logs.tf/1253200
meo’s Writeup: The meme match of the season, sadly it didn’t really live up to the hype. BOTTOMGUN’s roster simply is overall more experienced and has better dm than TOPGUN. The flank of JJslim and rob (, BOTTOMGUN) did a huge amount of work for BOTTOMGUN. JJslim even matched the DPM of his sniper, jaaay, a rare sight on Product. As seems to be a theme with TOPGUN, WiLLmaTiC performed far and beyond the rest of TOPGUN while losing. It’s sad to see TOPGUN keep losing despite WiLLmaTiC’s great sniper performance this season, but it’s encouraging to see he hasn’t given up!
VoxDei’s Writeup: This was a pretty exciting game to watch. Though the score shows a 4-1, #TOPGUN didn’t make it easy for #BOTTOMGUN. What actually made it easy was JJSlim’s performance, who absolutely went huge in his role this past week, putting up great numbers. Overall, the DM of #BOTTOMGUN kept the combo of #TOPGUN uneasy, which allowed them to feast in this fragfest.
Final result: -aa- won 4-2
meo’s Prediction: Aw^ wins (4-1)
VoxDei’s Prediction: Aw^ wins (4-2)
meo’s MVP: octa -aa-
VoxDei’s MVP: octa -aa-
meo’s Writeup: I don’t think many people expected -aa- to win this matchup (I certainly didn’t) and are wondering how exactly -aa- won. Looking at the stats I’d say the biggest reason -aa- won this match was almost certainly octa, who went absolutely insane on heavy. He managed not only to top frag on heavy, but also out damaged both his sniper and demo! If that’s not a heavy carry I don’t know what is.
VoxDei’s Writeup: In a surprising turn of events (depending on who you ask) -aa- takes down Aw^ in a 4-2 victory. -aa- was performing well in all the right places, with their Sniper, Scout, and Soldier putting in loads of work on frags. The one question mark is how the hell their Heavy managed to top frag, but some things are probably best left unanswered. Their logs are bugged because it double-tracked the damage, but they still show the obvious answer that -aa- just outmatched Aw^ on Product.
Final result: IFA won (4-0)
meo’s Prediction: IFA wins (4-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: IFA wins (4-0)
meo’s MVP: pie_hero IFA
VoxDei’s MVP: pie_hero IFA
Match length + Logs: 22:22 // http://logs.tf/1253927
meo’s Writeup: Unsurprisingly, wu^ was not able to keep up in this match at all. Also unsurprisingly, pie_hero, wish and TERRY CREWS did most of the work for IFA. Pie_hero especially went off, top fragging and nearing 700 dpm.
VoxDei’s Writeup: IFA makes it look easy to snap their losing streak (not counting their BYE win) and score a 4-0 over Wu Tang in 22 minutes. The real story here is piehero, who managed almost 50 kills in that time period and 673 DPM. In fact, besides him, wish also put up over 2 KPM in this win. There’s not really too much else to say here other than IFA is back.
Mature Dads Only vs BYE Week
As the title suggests, this week’s map is cp_steel. Expect a lot of confusion about the config, which I will tell you now, is “rcon exec ugc_hl_stopwatch.” This is a payload map wearing the mask of 5CP, and it’s one hell of a map.
We have some pretty awesome matchups on the way, which has made it very difficult to know what to cast. Steel is the home of big flank plays, roaming Pyros, weakened Snipers (praise Jesus!) and is one of the most coordinated maps in HL. Expect the team who comes prepared to take the victory here.
Mime and I have not yet decided who we are casting 😦 Vote here!
(Home team vs Visiting Team)
meo’s Prediction: sJ wins 2-0
VoxDei’s Prediction: sJ wins 2-0
meo’s Player(s) to watch: sJ – uber , crab_f , goldfish , evil | ● – Unicorn Wizard
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: sJ – crab_f , evil | Unicorn Wizard , Coco
meo’s Writeup: Both teams have a very good flank and even though sJ are definitely the favorites to win this one, anything can happen on steel. However, with Shadowball’s recent roster issues this match is looking more and more easy for sJ.This match should be a win for sJ, but don’t expect Shadowball to go out without a fight.
I am actually really excited for this matchup. This is a rematch from the top two silver teams last season, both of whom posted up 7-1 records. In fact, Shadowball’s only loss came in Week 6 to sJ, when they lost on koth_warmtic. Shadowball now has a chance to come back and exact some revenge on sJ for their tarnished record last season. The game is going to be close, but I don’t know if Shadowball has the firepower right now, especially with their current roster troubles leaving them without a Medic and Heavy. If Shadowball can fill the roles quickly and with quality, they can put up a fight, but I don’t see them taking this one. A close 2-0 for sJ.
It’s going to be hard to tell what happens in this one. Shadowball is in real trouble with their roster and no matter who they have play, I don’t think they’re going to stand a chance. DynamoVic (, sJ) will not be playing in this match, but considering the map is Steel, it shouldn’t affect them too much.
meo’s Prediction: appel wins (2-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: appel wins (2-1)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: Jeebus – kairu , shea | appel – blinx , bunny , american , Simon , SmileZ
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: Jeebus – kairu , ezrik | appel- blinx , bunny , Jayden
meo’s Writeup: Appel seems to have finally got a handle on their coordination issues, partially due to the addition of simon to their roster. Simon has taken over maincalling for appel and they are playing a lot more aggressive now, which should make better use of their roster’s insane DM. Although kairu and shea are sure to do great on the flank for Jeebus, Mini’s soldier DM seems to be a weak point on Jeebus’ flank. For appel, however, blinx, bunny and zaku (, appel) all have excellent DM and should all perform well in this match. Plus, american is going to be right at home on steel’s flank and will be constantly harassing Jeebus. Because of this, I think appel has the flank advantage in this matchup. Considering that appel’s flank has the advantage and that appel’s combo of simon + drunk uncle is likely to outperfrom Jeebus’ combo of ezrik + wlly and this is looking like a win for appel to me. Finally, SmileZ is likely to outsnipe comanglia,
if he doesn’t run his huntsman on Steel strat that is… especially if he runs his godlike huntsman on Steel strat.
VoxDei’s Writeup: The hype train is all aboard as one of these teams is getting ready to improve to 4-1. Each have been thwarted in thir attempts for an undefeated season by sJ, and now they come to battle eachother to find out who will reign supreme. This is a pretty spectacular matchup, with the experience of both rosters and the solid players althroughout. Strong flanks, strong combo, and pick classes which will make for a scary and exciting time for each of these teams.
meo’s Prediction: / ^ )> wins (2-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: / ^ )> wins (2-0)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: / ^ )>– Yimi , vand , mae , pomf | cNd – zoey , minti
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: / ^ )>– Yimi , mae | cNd – flick , eagle
meo’s Writeup: Although cNd is a solid mid-Gold team, their chances against the dm of Quail Noises are grim at best. While of course anything can happen on steel, cNd is outmatched almost player by player. If anyone is going to make game changing plays on cNd I’d look out for zoey on scout and minti on pyro. Zoey was doing really well on sniper for Shadowball and if she does as well on scout as sniper she’ll do a lot of work on the flank. As far as minti goes, pyro can get away with a lot of cheeky stuff on steel and minti is one of the best pyros in Gold – so I’d expect him to do well. Unless zoey, minti and the rest of cNd play the game of their lives though, this match should easily go to Quail Noises.
VoxDei’s Writeup: Up next to roll the dice and play quail noises is cNd. To be frank, I don’t really think cNd has the stuff to contend with the level of DM and strategiesthat the quails bring to the game. Assuming cNd are able to fill their Scout role with someone near the level of Yimi, we might see a really close game, but cNd will have to rely on their ex-demo, ex-scout, now demo flick if they want a shot here, who may be outmatched by mae over on the quails side. It’s hard to predict against quails here, so I won’t. 2-0 on their side.
meo’s Prediction: N/A
VoxDei’s Prediction: -ts- wins (2-1)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: safrix, who has come back to return ££ to their former glory.
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: -ts- – DrZoidy , SpecDeck , Kris18 | ££ – whymeo , max , watterson
meo’s Writeup: N/A
VoxDei’s Writeup: DrZoidy has emerged as -ts-‘s strongest player as of late. He’s performed well in each of their last 3 matchups, at or near the top of the scoreboard, even in their losses. ££ will be smart to keep extra firepower on their flank to not allow room for Zoidy and SpecDeck. However, -ts- is on a bit of a slide and ££ seems poised to hit their stride. Watterson has the ability to go absolutely huge at any point, and I can speak from experience that he
is a dirty cheating hustler can do some serious work with the Classic on Steel. This is going to be one of the best matchups of the week, but with -ts- having everything on the line, they are going to play out of their minds to win this week.
meo’s Prediction: KILLME wins (2-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: KILLME wins (2-0)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: KILLME – rob , JJSlim , Shotaway | No.2 – egwat
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: KILLME – JJSlim , Shotaway | No.2 – jbird , egwat
meo’s Writeup: With zuchima recently leaving No.2, they lost their best player and only tool to combat Meme Stealers. Meme Stealers flank of rob and JJslim is looking more and more like one of the best flanks in Gold this season and will likely find No.2’s efforts to stop them easily overcome. Meme Stealers is a team that is now looking to break into the top 8 with their new and improved roster and I don’t think they’ll have any trouble beating a team like No.2.
VoxDei’s Writeup: No.2 has been performing really well, but that may come to a halt on Steel against the surging Meme Stealers. Both performed very well, but only KILLME walked away with the win. No.2’s flank is going to be hurting with Zuchima off the team, but if they can fill the spot with someone strong, it may not affect them. Either way, they will be going up against rob and JJSlim, who put up crazy numbers last week, and No.2’s other strongest player, egwat, will probably be less of a factor being that Steel is classically not a Sniper-dominant map. The edge goes in KILLME’s favor because of the neutering of No.2’s two biggest fraggers.
meo’s Prediction: IFA wins (2-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: IFA wins (2-0)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: IFA – wish , TERRY CREWS , pie_hero | -aa- – octa
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: IFA – wish , TERRY CREWS | -aa- – caban , octa
meo’s Writeup: -aa- have proved themselves much more capable than I originally thought with a win over All Washed Up, I don’t see them putting up much of a fight against IFA. IFA’s dm is just too far ahead of -aa- with players like wish, pie_hero and TERRY CREWS. I expect this to be a quick 2-0 roll.
VoxDei’s Writeup: IFA is 1-2 in my book, because I believe their Bye Week win doesn’t truly “count.” However, they are going up against a team that they should outmatch handily, with plenty of one-sided matchups in their favor. -aa- has been performing pretty well as of late, but IFA may prove to be too strong of a challenge. A lot of stars would need to align for -aa- to take this, but if IFA truly throws, we could see a closer game.
meo’s Prediction: U$A wins (2-1)
VoxDei’s Prediction: DOES IT wins (2-1)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: DOES IT- super | U$A – kezia , Campy , moof
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: DOES IT- super , Rhy | U$A – keeg , Campy , joshcash
meo’s Writeup: One of the few close matches this week, this game is certain to be an interesting one. Each team has one really standout flank player, with kezia on U$A’s side and super on DOES IT’s side. Which flank comes out on top will play a big part in who wins this match. However, I think that Campy gives U$A a huge edge in this match and is the main reason I believe that U$A will take this game. Campy always puts out a ton of damage and will be a force to be reckoned with on Steel defense. This match really could go either way though, especially considering that U$A recently traded out ivan for a considerably weaker heavy in nick.
VoxDei’s Writeup: This is my most hyped match of the mid-Gold teams. U$A has not benefitted from an easy schedule, posting up at 1-3, but DOES IT took down Papa’s Peddlers on Ashville, whereas U$A couldn’t put a round up on Product. I think this has the potential to be a pretty close matchup, but the cards sort of fall in DOES IT’s favor. Kezia and Keeg over on the U$A side are going to be able to get work done on the flank, as well as Campy in the combo, but they will also be going up against Rhy, Super, and Juicy on DOES IT. A close 2-1 which is going to come down to the final seconds.
meo’s Prediction: #TOPGUN wins (2-1)
VoxDei’s Prediction: Aw^ wins (2-1)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: Aw^ – b1am , sharpshot , niko jims | #TOPGUN – fsd , deft , WiLLmaTiC
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: Aw^ – b1am , sithreis | #TOPGUN – fsd , sprok
meo’s Writeup: This game should be an interesting matchup, as TOPGUN and Aw^ fight to prove they don’t belong at the very bottom of Gold. For both teams their flank is one of the strongest parts of their team, with fatswimdude and cynex on TOPGUN and niko jims and b1am on Aw^. It will be a close matchup on the flank, but Willmatic and deft will outclass their counterparts on Aw^ and should give them the edge they need to win this game.
VoxDei’s Writeup: #TOPGUN’s combo is in trouble. They looked very much out of sync last week on Product, and it won’t get much easier for them on Steel where their cohesion is absolutely necessary. If they can’t get moving, this will end heavily in Aw^’s favor. They do benefit from a strong flank with cynex and fatswimdude, but b1am and sithreis over on the Aw^ side won’t make it easy. Considering #TOPGUN is playing at top form, they may take a round, but I don’t think they have the stuff to snag a victory.
meo’s Prediction: father wins (2-0)
VoxDei’s Prediction: father wins (2-1)
meo’s Player(s) to watch: father- phone , caboose | wu^- falkinghammer
VoxDei’s Player(s) to watch: father- phone | wu^ – lime , MoonDoggy
meo’s Writeup: A match against two of the lowest ranked teams in Gold with both hoping to dig their way out from the bottom. Personally (as long as Mature Dads keep the switch of phone to sniper from week 3) I believe this will be an easy win for Mature Dads. Phone has incredible hitscan aim and absolutely decimated U$A on sniper in their week 3 match despite Mature Dads losing 5-0. With phone likely to completely destroy wu^ and caboose a second player that outclasses everyone on wu^, this should be an easy win.
VoxDei’s Writeup: This is a matchup between two struggling, 1-3 teams. Both have solid rosters, but Wu Tang benefits greatly from experience. Despite this, phone has undoubtedly been one of the best performing players, even in father’s losses and is going to be a huge factor. If I was father, I would make sure phone is in the position he can do the most damage in, and play around him. They may benefit having him more on the flank than as a Sniper as they did in their last game.
Below you’ll find Week 4’s stats and the Team of the Week.
