And we reach our final week before playoffs. The six playoff-bound teams are getting ready, while the unlucky three that missed out are slowly cleaning up their stores. The map is CP_Steel, intended in general for the first week of Playoffs, but instead for Platinum, will bring the season to an end.
Bv vs :>, Bv victorious 2-1
And so, the final seed should be decided. While :> had a fantastic showing and a fantastic season, Bv managed a pretty incredible comeback after those first few weeks, sneaking into playoffs off the back of this win. With the numbers pretty even throughout the teams, with the combo classes having the biggest differences.
EVL vs ‘92, ‘92 victorious 2-0
Legendary sub, Blues, shows up in the absence of Vanilla Love, and leads ‘92 to victory. Artistic liberty aside, the ‘92 combo pulled their weight far more than the EVL one, with the flank numbers being roughly equal between the teams, few exceptions aside.
.knd vs dK, .knd victorious 2-0
Nursey with four deaths and Metawe with triple that should give you a rough idea of how this battle went down. While dK did give .knd a showing, the undefeated streak continued, with .knd having dK’s number throughout the game, not giving them a chance to take the upper hand. Kresnik and Scizor especially played well, which is particularly impressive in Scizor’s case, playing Scout on Payload.
.$$ vs aMw, .$$ victorious 2-0
After an upsetting game last week, Feroaffer seems to have recovered, though vlad outperformed him slightly, but that’s not incredibly surprising. With Spamfest and feint being the only others with a K/D that wasn’t negative, aMw clearly struggled to get much done. A more surprising are the numbers put up by .$$, as Feroaffer and Invader aside, most of .$$ got roughly a 1.0 K/D. While it’s easy to see .$$ playing stupidly aggressive and being punished for it, if they get into a habit of doing that, they’ll find their playoff games harder to win.
1: Kids Next Door [Scizor / Etney / Katsy / Jarrett / Kresnik / Ender / Nursey / yosh / Dimento]
Little surprise here. A roster that hasn’t changed at all since the start of the season, and a roster that hasn’t dropped a single round since the start of the season. Even if they get absolutely decimated by ‘92 Dream Team this week, that wouldn’t be enough to move them down. Expect nothing different from this team going into playoffs, aside finally maybe a few dropped rounds as everyone else tries to kick it up a notch.
2: $ilver $avages [Godwash / Jackster / Lazy / Invader / Trelan / Angryofficer / Skeez / Feroaffer / Rolls Royce]
The $avages take an expected victory against aMw, with any shakeups happening way below their rank, leaving them no worries. They’re practically a lock for #2, which is certainly a nice position to be in, especially for the one week break come playoffs. With them being looked at as one of the potential teams to dethrone .knd, they’ll definitely want to step it up to not repeat Viaduct, should they have those aspirations.
3: Dunning-Kruger Effect [b4nny / Bobby / Huey Lewis / Xan / Karl / Jordan_ / Metawe / corsa / Acooma]
dK seem to be stuck right outside of the Grand Finals, apparently doomed to repeat their ending like the last dK that played. While this is a very different dK this season, losses against .knd and .$$ will be hard to overcome unless the players on their team who may not be as committed to improving in HL change their mindset as the stakes increase.
4: ‘92 Dream Team [slemnish / trippah / jekjekj / odb / Vanilla Love / LittleDeath / Coldster / SGC / Scruff McGruff]
‘92 are in a comfortable position, if they don’t have any aspirations. With m|M and Bv below them as very beatable teams, they should have a nice playoff games before being eventually eliminated. With the teams above them likely gearing up to take down .knd, ‘92 will have to go an extra mile to slip into a placement medal spot.
5: Memento Mori [Syath / Doll / Geosus / Giraffe / Eerie Person / Scratchy / Apple / Bagel / Deaft]
While their game against .$$ may be more in the air than expected, this should be where m|M will end up. As with ‘92 and Bv, they’ll have to put a lot into getting a strong playoff run, putting in far more than the teams above them to get anywhere.
6: Chill Penguins [Seer / Dreadnought / HA Johnny / m66 / IssGonRain / SilentDom / (+1)
As much as I like to avoid being a doom prophesier, Bv doesn’t have the best chance here. They defeated :> and managed to get into playoffs, but it’ll be hard to see them overcoming the defeats that the other playoff teams gave them.
7: Goofbirds [Lehcs? / ? / Deejay / Rightjustify / brick? / sigafoo / ? / Jesus / Daynife]
With their playoff dreams snatched from right under them, many players decided to throw in the towel, figuring that it wasn’t worth showing up for the final match when it would only lead to anger and stress. However, with the Gold playoffs starting, plenty of skilled players have found themselves without a game to play, with brick and Lehcs coming in from Shadowball. With an unknown Soldier and Medic still, however, the :> of this week will be a lot different than the :> of past.
8: EVL Gaming HL [Linkuser / Cap$ize / Billysaurus / Avast / Bonesaw / kNyne / Rogue / Vinny / stabby]
The EVL crew take an expected loss against .$$, and get ready to end their season. They have a nice game against :> to maybe grab a higher ranking and boost their end-of-season morale. They had a pretty decent season for a fun season Gold moveup, so it’ll be interesting to see where the team goes in the future.
9: A Million Ways [Madoff / Fire / Digresser / Split_ / Fireshaker / Spamfest / Spork / vlad / feint]
After a particularly scathing piece last week, it’s hard. aMw has always been a favorite of mine, and despite it all, I’ve always rooted for them personally. But, it seems this time the story comes to a close, with the team seemingly expected to close as the leader, Digresser, heads to Europe with no way to continue leading. While I expect a few rumors of aMw’s zombiefication to float, we’ll have to see how it goes.
:> vs EVL
Poor, poor :>. After losing nearly half of their players due to the playoff dream dying, EVL will be bloodthirsty to grab another win. With :> still not having either a Soldier or Medic lined up to play, the coordination-supporting CP_Steel will be leaning in EVL’s favor. 2-0 in favor of EVL.
‘92 vs knd.
.knd is here to finish off their perfect season, and ‘92 on Steel may be too little to interrupt it. While odb may be one of the best Demos this season, and has a skilled combo to back him up, .knd’s coordination and knowledge should be too much for ‘92 to grab a round. Expect Scizor and Jarrett to lead the offensive, consistently shaking up ‘92 and not allowing them to grab a foothold, on either color. 2-0 in favor of .knd.
m|M vs .$$
If rankings and previous results are anything to go off of, .$$ should have this in the bag cleanly. Steel, from a class perspective, promotes their players who have a tendency to go big, while covering up the few players on their team who may not be able to pull those same numbers. While Giraffe surely has the “How To Play CP_Steel” book memorized, it’ll be hard for many members of m|M to go toe to toe with their peers. 2-0 in favor of .$$.
dK vs aMw
Dunning Kruger gets an easy game to transition into playoffs, no doubt jealously eyeing ‘92 for the chance to face .knd on Steel. In the other corner, however, a constantly pushed around aMw is battering the hatches for a quick defeat before an apparent disbanding. Especially on a map that doesn’t promote Vlad as much as others, we’ll see possibly the quickest game of the week here. 2-0 in favor of dK.
