UGC Plat Highlander Season 19

Playoffs Week 2

by VoxDei

Week 1 of the playoffs is over, and as I’ve said many times throughout the first 2 weeks, there were no surprises. DeLisi is the only high seed to have lost.

The Kids vs Kid Warrior: Reborn

Predicted outcome: 2-0 The Kids

Final result: 2-0 The Kids

Match length + Logs: 24:32 // +

The first layup of the week comes with .knd vs kW. I had the dubious honor of ringing for kW during this match, and I have to say, we had a good time. I won’t get bogged down with logs, since they’ll tell a relatively obvious story. From firsthand experience, Giraffe and Slemnish always seemed to be in our face. Giraffe was getting a heavy pocket from Nursey, and why not? He was wiping the floor with the entirety of the kW crew. Exile had a few decent (and a few not-so-decent) kritz plays which kept him at the top for kW.

We had a lot of fun, the 2nd half turning into a trainwreck with Yosh snagging an epic Huntsman drop while I hid behind a rock on A, and other drops thanks to the Vaccinator (which interestingly enough worked pretty well during this mess.) I appreciate the majority of .knd maintaining a sense of levity during the match as well.

As expected, .knd moves on to the next round while kW faces elimination next week against DeLisi

Dunning-Kruger Effect v4 vs EVL Gaming

Predicted Outcome: 2-0 dK

Final result: 2-0 dK

Match length + Logs: 16:53 // +

Honestly, there’s even less to say here than in the .knd match. You have probably the #1 team on Steel versus a team who made playoffs due to luck rather than skill, with likely the majority of that team phoning it in. bo4r is as bo4r does and he ended the 17 minute match with 29 kills. It looks like dK had less mercy than .knd opting for the quick roll rather than some added fun- which is not a criticism.

We’ll see dK go on to play bote while EVL plays Bv in the first week of the Lower Bracket matches.

The Knotty Buoys vs Chill Penguins

Predicted Outcome: 2-0 bote

Final result: 2-0 bote

Match length + Logs: 28:58 //

Finally a game that wasn’t a complete blowout. Rightjustify had a monster game, soaking up a huge amount of Rogue’s heals, but in turn putting up a solid 34-11/440 DPM game. His frags were beaten out only slightly by fuzion, who put up 35, putting in work against Bv’s flank and and combo. Bv saw a little light with m66 and Paals putting up some decent numbers, but that probably has more to do with being combo members tanked on heals than outplaying the majority of bote.

bote now moves on to the next match in the upper bracket against dK while Bv has some hope left going up against a weakened EVL roster who have lost 4 of their last 5 games.

The DeLisi Experience vs Man Crush Monday

Predicted Outcome: 2-1 #mcm

Final result: 2-1 #mcm

Match length + Logs: 46:26 //

This ended up a pretty solid game between these two teams, registering the only competitive match of the week. The match was pretty hard fought all around, which manifested itself in a back and forth match which was won in overtime. Ezrik and Rue found themselves champions of the afternoon, who accounted for almost 1/3 of #mcm’s frags and 60% of the heals. Jayden had an absolutely huge night but focused the majority of his frags on the Sniper and Scout and less so on the combo of #mcm outside of Ezrik, who probably made himself a juicy target aggressively taking down a large number of DeLisi’s players. Surprisingly Couches died more than Affliction, which kind of nullifies the whole “Couches never dies” belief.

I’d like to make special mention of American who managed to not go negative in this game and end up with a 31-10-31 K/A/D line which helped his team immensely. American is a solid fragger, but when he gets shut down he can end up with some pretty heinous scorelines. Clearly things were working well for him here to put in some heavy work.

Power Rankings

So a quick go through of the power rankings. I’d like to note that there isn’t anything that dK specifically did to earn their spot above .knd, but it seems more to be a change of mindset. I’ve definitely gotten the feeling that .knd isn’t going to be able to continue their regular season dominance, similarly to what happened last season. dK is stronger now with bo4r and they’ve been putting more effort into the season which should pay dividends when these teams likely play in the Semifinals.

  1. dK
  2. .knd
  3. bote
  4. #mcm
  5. DeLisi
  6. Bv
  7. kW
  8. EVL

Playoffs: Week 2 Preview

(Home team vs Visiting Team)

The Kids vs Man Crush Monday

Predicted Outcome: 4-0 The Kids

#mcm has been an interesting team to follow this season with shades of impressive play as well as some headscratchers. Last week against DeLisi, I’d say DeLisi taking a round was unsurprising, but that comes off of a week that they were able to draw blood against .knd on a koth map. Then again, it needs to be mentioned that .knd has dropped rounds to Bv and #mcm on Ramjam and Ashville respectively, meaning their may be a chink in the armor of .knd somewhere and it starts with koth.

I think history may repeat itself, but it will be a lot more difficult to do moving into the comfortable Viaduct over the less played maps of Ramjam and Ashville, on the converse it will be more comfortable for #mcm as well.

.knd should settle nicely into their roles on Viaduct, Giraffe will soak up heals and aggressively move his team into positions to choke #mcm at their spawn as well. We’ll also see big games by Slemnish and Etney as the flanks will chew up blinx and bunny, no matter how strong they are in their own right. There should be some well contested rounds and it may allow #mcm to sneak one past .knd, but there shouldn’t be any way that #mcm end victorious.

Dunning-Kruger Effect v4 vs The Knotty Buoys

Predicted Outcome: 4-1 dK

What was once a heavily anticipated rematch has morphed into a grudge match. The reason, which has been probably overstated is bo4r’s move to dK from bote’s roster. These two teams fought earlier in the season on Viaduct which ended 4-3 in dK’s favor. This was due largely in part to bo4r (as well as fuzion) who dropped a massive 72 spot in a match that infamously sent Axiomatic back into one of his spirals. (Logs here.) bote is actually going to be at an extra disadvantage with two of their main players, brick and Rogue unable to attend the match. This is a hard blow since it will be 2/3 of their combo, and no matter how competent the sub, there will likely be some friction while they try and sort out how each member plays. With fuzion slamming on Scout and p3nguin, who has been performing admirably the past few weeks, bote has the opportunity to still be a thorn in dK’s side, but have weakened chances missing a number of players who factored into their first matchup.

dK has enough weapons in the form of b4nny, corsa, and Vand to pummel bote even if bo4r doesn’t have as magnificent of a game, so it should still fall in their favor. Expect a 4-1 with dK moving onto the Semifinal matchup against .knd.

The DeLisi Experience vs Kid Warrior: Reborn

Predicted Outcome: 4-2 DeLisi

Strangely enough, I think that DeLisi vs kW may be the closest matchup of the week, with the chance that dK/bote could edge it out. Both of these teams are on a decline but on the same playing field because of it. It’s going to be a wonky game, no doubt. Ringers galore for both teams makes it difficult to predict who will do what, but I can certainly try. DeLisi is surprisingly going to be the more coordinated team with at least a stable and quality Medic in Affliction manning the helm for DeLisi. You know kW is having issues when they ask a player who hasn’t mained since S17 to ring on his secondary class against .knd (yours truly.) Meyy and beastie have been solid for kW since their addition to the team, and if 88 decides to play Spy, they should have some assistance there as well. I still think the more coordinated team will have the better chance, so whoever suits up for DeLisi should be able to put in at least the same amount of effort. I’m going to work off of the assumption that Zoey will play, and she will likely be the deciding factor here. A messy and close win for DeLisi is on the horizon.

Chill Penguins vs EVL Gaming

Predicted Outcome: 4-1 Bv

This is not going to be a hard fought game on either side, and it seems rather sad to lead off a paragraph like that. It’s no secret that EVL have pretty much given up on the season- in fact with how they’re playing it seems as though they would have preferred that {DT} stay alive to keep them out of the playoff race. On the other hand Bv, once believed to be one of the better mid-Plat teams this season is playing dismally. At some point you need to call a spade a spade (he’s on bote) and although Bv had some hopes this season, 4 straight losses is a glaring mark on this season. Bv should still take the game as EVL is in shambles, and their biggest threat, Vinny, will probably be pretty well contested by Space Ghost’s Coffee. The good thing for EVL is that since it’s Viaduct against a weaker team, they can pretty much shut their brain off and try to DM their way to a victory, but if Bv still has the passion, they should be able to counter this with mildly superior coordination.
