UGC Gold Highlander Season 20

Week 4 Matchups and Power Rankings

by whymeo

This week I’ll be doing something a bit different with the article. I’ve decided to remove the previous week wrap-up section and somewhat combine it with the power rankings. I often talk about team’s past performances in the power rankings, so I decided it would make more sense to just talk how a team did last week in the power rankings instead of in a separate section. Let me know if you preferred the old way however!

As far as matches go last week, it was largely business as usual in Gold: a lot of one-sided matchups. As we get deeper into the season we’ll start to see some really close games however, and The Wittmen vs. galaxy swim team was a preview of that. Probably the most exciting of those close matches is coming up with Door vs. The Slammin’ Jammers, the two undefeated teams in Gold. First though, let’s go over the rankings:

Week 4 Power Rankings

1. Dedoris (DOOR) []

[??/spec deck/zuchima/trapster/caboose/kainao/alto/zoey/zagron]

Last match logs:

Door has lost their scout, syath, who was arguably their best player. Furthermore, their pickup of trapster on demo seems like somewhat of a downgrade from coco. However, they have retained some of their top level players such as zoey on sniper and caboose on heavy.

Last week Door played Ayylmao. The game was a bit closer than I would have expected, but I think that speaks to the strength of Ayylmao and not any weakness on Door’s part. All the players you would expect to impress did, with zoey, syath and caboose having the most frags on Door.  The biggest question with Door is how affected they’ll be by the loss of syath and coco. We’ll soon see with their upcoming match against The Slammin’ Jammers.

2. The Slammin’ Jammers (JAM) []

[devastation/mirrorman/Arzt Hispanian/source/Grandislayer/hyphen/turkeylips/andrew/monadragon]

Last match logs:

The Slammin’ Jammers easily retain their 2nd place spot with a quick win over 9 angry men. The Jammers won the game so handily that there really isn’t a whole lot to say about it. The most notable thing is that arzt (pyro, JAM) somehow went 29 – 12 on pyro. Besides that, andrew (sniper, JAM) and source (demo, JAM) completely wiped the floor with 9am. This week will be a much more interesting week for The Jammers, however, as they have a match against the other undefeated Gold team, Door, on the horizon.

3. Shooting Blanks (sb!) [+1]

[sandblast/Gabe/ŁΛMBDλ/megaboy/Chris/IcedKappa/uber/Fallen Lord/Rimbus Reynolds]

Last match logs:

Shooting Blanks regain their spot in the top three after a very stunning performance against Suicide Watch. It’s no exaggeration to say that everyone on sb played extremely well in that match. Gabe (soldier, sb!) and bonesaw (previously scout, sb!) outplayed Unicorn Wizard (soldier, sw) and bigtoes (scout, sw) on the flank and fallen lord (sniper, sb!) easily won the svs against xen (sniper, sw).

Even more notable than those previous performances is just how well megaboy did on demo for sb. Being not only a new addition to the sb roster, but also a player that doesn’t have much highlander experience, I’ll admit I didn’t expect a ton out of megaboy. However, he proved me completely wrong by racking up a ridiculous 49 kills (with a mere 9 deaths) for sb. That’s more than the frags of sw’s heavy, pyro and demo combined! Dear lord.

With megaboy looking to be about as good of a demo pickup as possible, Shooting Blanks is looking quite solid again. With such an impressive win over Suicide Watch plus an improved roster it seems that sb is ready again to contest The Jammers and Door for the top spot this season. I’m looking forward to seeing if they can come back from their hard loss to The Jammers and put up a good showing against Door — when the time comes for their match that is.

4. The Wittmen (rk!) [-1]

[dotsy/hiway/dusk/Ash/randy/rosario/cider/water cat/proto]

Last match logs: and

The Wittmen have dropped a spot in the rankings, however it’s not due to their performance last week. It’s simply because Shooting Blanks is looking too damn good. I suppose their match against galaxy swim wasn’t quite as one sided as I would have hoped either, though.

The logs for this game tell the tale of a very close match. There was only a difference of five kills between the two teams. In the last half it was an extremely close 131 to 132 kills. Considering that galaxy swim team hasn’t looked that amazing so far this season, and even appear to have taken a downgrade in sniper going from vari to percy, this match didn’t go quite as well for The Wittmen as I would have expected. Still, no one on rk played poorly and they did win in the end so it’s not worth dwelling on too much. Proto (spy, rk) and others did well on rk and as long as they can come back from this match The Wittmen should still be in running for playoffs.

5. Ayylmao (˙͜>˙) [+2]

[LAB8/Juno/Ein/Lucky/??/Yui/Happy Bob/Rockmonkey/sasnardash]

Last match logs:

Ayylmao continue to impress with a close game against Door last week. Yes, it was a 2-0 win in the favor of Door, but the rounds were relatively close. Indeed, the frag count ended up being 196 (Ayylmao) to 220 (Door), which is honestly quite respectable from Ayylmao considering how good Door has proven to be so far. The two best players on Ayylmao still look to be their sniper Rockmonkey and demo Lucky. Rockmonkey was able to keep up with zoey, although he did end up getting outperformed by her a bit, and Lucky actually completely outplayed Door’s demo of trapster.

Besides Lucky and Rockmonkey Ayylmao’s whole roster seems to be quite solid so far. Keeping it close with Door was a good start, but we’re yet to see if they’ll be able to beat any of the top four teams and break into playoffs. I personally am not sure, but even though they’ve completely surpassed my expectations so far, making playoffs still seems like it would be quite a feat.

6. Suicide Watch (sw) [-1]

[bigtoes/Unicorn Wizard/pooping/vurt/Box of Cheese/Iso/affliction/voxdei/88 fingers edward]

Last match logs:

VOXDEI’S BACK ON SNIPER OMGGGGG!!! 1ST PLACE TRAIN INCOMING *TOOT TOOT* !!! (voxdei tried to withhold the fact that he would be back on sniper for sw because “meo might hype it up too much” so I figure I must hype it up even more as revenge…)

In all seriousness,  xen was quite weak in Suicide Watch’s last two matches and putting voxdei back on sniper does seem like a step in the right direction for Suicide Watch. Still, you can’t discount the absolute destruction they faced at the hands of Shooting Blanks last week. The frag count, 133 for sw and 243 for sb, was anything but close. True, xen was still on sniper for sw and not doing so hot but you can’t put a 110 frag differential all on xen. Vurt (demo, sw) especially dropped the ball in their match, with only 8 frags and 26 deaths. Unicorn Wizard also did quite poorly, rather uncharastically, going 15 – 35 with low damage too boot.

I do think that the team might have had some players who performed worse than they normally do in their match against sb. Do I think that Suicide Watch has much chance of beating sb even if they’re in top form? No. However, I don’t think the fact that they got absolutely rolled by sb automatically puts them below teams like gst or ngc, as they might have been able to keep the match a bit closer if they were having a better night.

Suicide Watch has had a rough start to the season, having gotten rolled over pretty hard by both Door and Shooting Blanks. Still, they have players who have remained pretty consistent through it all like bigtoes (scout, sw), BOXOFCHEESE (heavy, sw) and 88 fingers edward (spy, sw). I think they still have a shot at taking the 4th playoffs spot from The Wittmen or Ayylmao.

7. galaxy swim team (gst) [-1]

Last match logs: and

Percy replacing vari on sniper for galaxy swim team seems to be quite a downgrade. Phlps on scout however was a humongous upgrade and his presence seems to largely be what made things so damn hard for The Wittmen last week. By the last half most of galaxy swim team was underperforming quite heavily, likely wanting to be done with the match, and phlps was the only left still performing extremely well. This inevitably led to The Wittmen taking the win, albeit barely.

Still, last week does highlight the issues that a no-scrim, off-classing team of mostly 6’s players faces. Not only do they not have much practice as a team or on their classes, but they honestly don’t really seem to care that much on top of everything. To make matters worse, their roster seems to change from week to week. If phlps doesn’t continue to play for gst it seems they could be well and truly boned. However, if phlps stays on scout and vari makes a return to sniper? Well, gst could probably be a contestant for playoffs then. However, as is the nature of no-scrim off-class teams, gst probably doesn’t care enough to try and convince their best players to all play on the same weeks. And so, we might see them drop even further down the rankings as the season goes on.

8. The New Generation Crew (ngc) [+2]

[Duke/m0nsta/gingi/Hedgehog Hero/DZCreeper/PapiYisus/Snake/Markers/iXton]

Last match logs:

It seems like I was a bit too quick to knock ngc down the rankings after they lost to Ayylmao, as they’ve pulled off a pretty easy win against DAT. It looks to have been a victory born simply of having better dm, with duke (scout, ngc) making things especially hard for DAT. Still, with a loss to Ayylmao and a win over gst only due to a last half forfeit things don’t look great for ngc. Unless they really turn up the heat they’re probably well and truly out of the fight for playoffs, but perhaps they can surprise me.

9. (DOES IT) [-1]

Last match logs:

As expected DOES IT’s match against Harambe’s Heroes was…not very close, to say the least. Like 255 to 82 kills not close. In short, DOES IT kind of stomped Harambe’s Heroes. However, with HH being by far the worst team in Gold it pretty much was, for the function of these rankings, a bye week. They drop a spot as ngc moves back up and we’ll wait to see how they fare against better teams before moving them.

10. Disingenuous Assertions (DAT) [-1]

Last match logs:

When predicting that DAT would beat ngc last week I seem to have made the mistake of predicting based purely off of each team’s best players. And indeed, wxy (demo, DAT) and podgy (sniper, DAT) both did quite well in this match. With the exception of down (pyro, DAT) and rondego (heavy, DAT) however, everyone else on DAT did rather poorly. It seems they just didn’t have the dm to contest The New Generation Crew. If the half of DAT that performed rather poorly can pick themselves up and do better next time, perhaps DAT will rise above low-Gold. For now however, things are starting to look a bit grim for them.

11. Tune Squad (TS) [-]

[Sleeping/Davidb/sous chef/Niko Jims/dobb/??/KS/sinned/sharpshot]

Last match logs: N/A (bye week)

Tune Squad had a bye week last week and thus retains their rank.

12. Nine Angry Men (9am) [-]

[Career/spaghetti/Hunter/oreo/Tacos/Bacon Stripper/Tasmaunk/Willmatic/Lunean]

Last match logs:

Nine Angry men simply weren’t able to put up much of a fight against The Jammers and thus retain their spot near the bottom. Willmatic (sniper, 9am) was the only player on 9am to put up much of a fight and he simply can’t do it alone.

Oddly june (of Bv fame…haha just kidding no one pays attention to us) was on demo for this match. Perhaps if she’d played soldier this game would have been a bit closer.

13. Harambe’s Heroes (HH) [-]

[D3STRUCTION DELICIOUS/Rokkitfrog/Swifty/Boo/Butt3r/Missa/Toady/anjirocool/phorofor]

Last match logs:

A season of pain continues for Harambe’s Heroes, as they got utterly destroyed by DOES IT last week. I don’t see them climbing out of last place.

Week 4 Predictions

The Slammin’ Jammers vs. Door

My prediction: 4-3 Door

Door is hurting. Not only have they had to replace coco with trapster, a respectable demo but a bit of a downgrade, but they’ve also lost one of their best players in syath. This should be Jammers game.

“But meo”, you might ask, “literally like four fucking lines ago you predicted Door to win. What gives?” Well, first of all, have some goddamn patience. I’ll tell you why Door might very well win this game: zoey.

“Oh we’ve heard it a million damn times from you now, we get that zoey is good, but is she really good enough to carry Door right after losing Syath?” Normally? No. But this is ashville and if you’ve been keeping a close eye on the highlander scene you’d know that zoey is a goddamned beast on ashville. Don’t believe me? In season 19 on ashville zoey topfragged in her match against Bv and beat space ghost’s coffee in the sniper vs. sniper eleven to two. Freaking eleven to two! Even more impressive than thought though? In season 18 on ashville zoey practically dragged her team across the finish line, getting 65 frags in a only 46 minutes, completely outplaying everyone in the server. And ashville is supposed to be the worst KOTH map for sniper!

Okay, so I just spent an entire paragraph talking about how amazing zoey is at ashville. Not only am I gonna look like a huge doofus if andrew (sniper, JAM) outsnipes her, but I’m sure everyone else on Door and JAM reading this is getting annoyed with me. However, zoey is really a huge factor in this match. Door has been going through some roster issues and I really think she needs to come up big for Door to win this one. With players like andrew, mirrorman (soldier, JAM) and mondragon (spy, JAM) The Jammers look ready to win this one. They simply seem to have the better roster at this point. Maybe some players on Door besides zoey will prove me wrong and come up huge, or maybe they’ll get a last minute scout who is absolutely nutty, but I think barring that this match rides on the shoulders of zoey. No pressure!

EDIT: apparently syath has returned to scout for Door. Ashville is well known to syath’s best map as well, so I think this match is now heavily tilted in Door’s favor. I’d say likely 4-1 Door.

The New Generation Crew vs. The Wittmen

My prediction: 4-2 rk

The Wittmen and The New Generation Crew seem to be two similar teams. Both have very solid rosters with not a single weak link and strong coordination overall, but they also both lack a star player who is capable of sometimes reaching insane levels of play that can turn a match around. Because of this, I think this match is probably one of the least likely this season to be an upset (watch me be wrong…sigh). With both The Wittmen and ngc playing off strong coordination and a team of competent players, it seems like The Wittmen will take this simply because they’re the more coordinated team and their players are a bit better than ngc’s on average. If duke does well on scout, as he often does, then ngc should be able to take a round or two. Still, The Wittmen should be able to take this one fairly painlessly.

Nine Angry Men vs. Shooting Blanks

My prediction: 4-0 sb!

With their newly improved roster consisting of megaboy on demo and sandblast on scout, Shooting Blanks look like a team ready to take on Door and The Jammers. Nine Angry Men simply won’t pose much of a problem at all. Willmatic (sniper, 9am) is the only player on 9am who could do much to stop 9am’s impending destruction in this match, but his efforts will inevitably be akin to a man trying to stop a wave from a tsunami with a bucket. A Bucket with a hole in it.

galaxy swim team vs. Ayylmao

My prediction: 4-2 Ayylmao

This should be an interesting match, largely because the result will differ so heavily based on who galaxy swim team fields on match night. Vari on sniper and phlps on scout? They’d probably beat Ayylmao with those two. Phlps on scout but no vari? They might take a round or two then. No phlps or vari? That’s probably a 4-0 for Ayylmao.

So really, it’s rather hard to predict how this match will go because you never know what a team of off-classing 6’s players will bring to the table. Presuming percy is on sniper for gst, I think rockmonkey should handily win the svs. If phlps shows up on scout for gst he will be a major thorn in Ayylmao’s side, but Lucky (demo, Ayylmao) should dominate the combo of gst enough that phlps’ efforts on the flank won’t be enough to win the match.

Disingenuous Assertions vs. DOES IT

My prediction: 4-0 DOES IT

DAT already faltered against duke (scout, ngc) last week on upward. Their chances of being able to counter wish (scout, DOES IT) on ashville, perhaps the best scout map in rotation? They don’t look good to say the least. I simply don’t think DAT’s flank has the dm to keep wish from walking all over them. Wxy (demo, DAT) and podgy (sniper, DAT) will undoubtedly put up decent performances, but you need your whole team to have solid dm to keep an amazing scout down on ashville and DAT just doesn’t have that.

Suicide Watch vs. Tune Squad

My prediction: 4-0 sw

This should prove a good break for Suicide Watch after the rough last couple of weeks they’ve had. Voxdei (sniper, sw) will be able to regain his footing on sniper and the whole team will get to take a breather. Or I could be horribly wrong and Tune Squad will crush them, but given their performance so far I’d say that seems rather unlikely. Tune Squad is off-classing and not really trying so I don’t really see them giving sw much trouble. Sw should be able to take a breath and get ready for when things start getting hard again. HARD LIKE VOXDEI’S MASSIVE COCK AS HE PLOWS THROUGH GOLD AGAIN HAHAHA!!!
