UGC Gold Highlander Season 20

Week 6 Matchups and Power Rankings

by whymeo

The end of the season fast approaches, and how playoffs will look is beginning to be clearer and clearer each week. Increasingly, the matches that take place will decide who makes playoffs and who does not. In short, this is probably the most important part of the season. So, let’s take a look at how the teams appear to stack up before these last few weeks of matches take place.

Week 6 Power Rankings

NOTE: Due to Suicide Watch’s death, the ranking shift indicator takes into account a team’s shift in relation to other teams, not actual numerical value.

1. The Slammin’ Jammers (JAM) []

[JJslim/mirrorman/Arzt Hispanian/source/Grandislayer/hyphen/turkeylips/andrew/dev]

Last match logs:

Last week The Jammers made quick work of another opponent, The Wittmen, in a half an hour 2-0 victory on cp_steel. JJslim continues to prove to be a solid pickup on scout for The Jammers and dev is managing to hold his own on spy. Any worries The Jammers might have had about the loss of mondragon and resulting small roster shuffle should be thoroughly assuaged. Andrew continues to look like the best sniper in Gold, and the flank of JJslim + mirrorman (soldier, JAM) is only rivaled by that of Door’s. With individually very strong players and strong teamwork, The Jammers’s 1st place spot currently seems fairly safe.

2. Dedoris (DOOR) []

[syath/spec deck?/zuchima/trapster/teapot/kainoa/alto/zoey/zagron]

Last match logs:

While Door took several minutes longer to defeat their opponents than The Jammers, the results were still similarly decisive. The show was largely stolen by Door’s flank of syath (scout, Door) and spec deck (soldier, Door) who combined to contribute 96 kills out of Door’s total of 275. Pretty impressive, I’d say.

In addition to their flank, things are overall looking good for Door. Zoey (sniper, Door) continues to out snipe all her opponents (except for andrew) and the newly acquired teapot (heavy, Door) seems to be working together well with alto (medic, Door) and trapster (demo, Door) to form a solid combo. Kainoa (engineer, Door) also stood out a lot in Door’s last match, grabbing an unusually high number of frags for an engineer on cp_steel. It’s easy to forget about engineers, but Kainoa has been around for awhile now. It should come as no surprise that his dm is above the average for Gold nowadays.

3. Shooting Blanks (sb!) [-]

[benn/Gabe/ŁΛMBDλ/ash/Chris/IcedKappa/uber/Fallen Lord/Rimbus Reynolds]

Last match logs:

On the other side of the coin, Shooting Blanks must be a disappointed with their 2-0 loss to Door. They put up an admirable fight, and in the end they largely lost because their flank was not able to keep up with Door’s. This might partially be because bonesaw, who isn’t too familiar with the class, was on scout for Shooting Blank’s this week, which is not a permanent change. Benn is now on scout for sb, along with ash being added on demo. No matter the roster, sb has proven themselves to be a top five team this season, and really only could lose out of playoffs if they lost to both Nine Angry Men and The Wittmen, which seems unlikely.

4. The Wittmen (rk!) [-]

[dotsy/plan/qusk/hiway/randy/gus/cider/water cat/proto]

Last match logs:

The Wittmen simply did not have any answer to The Jammers last week. They appeared to be outgunned. Still, their position as #4 seems pretty safe, unless Nine Angry Men’s recently added plat talent proves to be a complete game changer. Besides, no one The Wittmen did especially bad against The Jammers, it’s just no one did especially well either. They just weren’t good enough as a team to win the match, but there’s no sign that they’re not still playoffs capable.

5. Nine Angry Men (9am) [+1]

[catgroove/vryktion/Hunter/rightjustify/eerie/Bacon Stripper/teddy/Willmatic/Lunean]

Last match logs: and

Nine Angry Men easily tore through The New Generation Crew last week. Not surprisingly, Rightjustify (demo, 9am) and eerie (heavy, 9am) were the biggest factors in their win. No one on 9am looked particularly weak however and if they keep on playing decently rj and eerie might just be able to carry them to playoffs. If Willmatic can summon up some of his Season 18 performances things might start looking really scary for The Wittmen.

6. Ayylmao (˙͜>˙) [-1]

[LAB8/Juno/Ein/Lucky/pazer/Yui/Happy Bob/Rockmonkey/shido]

Last match logs: N/A (DOES IT forfeited)

Ayylmao were able to grab a free forfeit win over DOES IT last week. They drop a spot in the rankings however, due to Nine Angry Men looking like a rather formidable team with their new roster. Perhaps Ayylmao will get a chance to prove who is better though?

7. galaxy swim team (gst) []

[rowpieces/trippa/spring rolls/safrix/??/Jimmyhat/tiptoes/phlps/pomf]

Last match logs: N/A (Tune Squad forfeited to galaxy swim team)

Another forfeit took place last week, and galaxy swim team was on the receiving end of the forfeit win. They also appear to have gotten their roster somewhat in order, but it’s probably a case of too little too late. If they win their next three matches they could still make playoffs, but I find this scenario unlikely. The top of Gold is pretty strong this season after all.

Still, I wouldn’t totally write them off. They appear to have made the strongest version of their roster yet, including more high-level 6’s talent than before. Unfortunately for gst, they have already lost to The Wittmen and Ayylmao with weaker versions of their roster. To make playoffs now, they’ll likely have to beat two of either Shooting Blanks, Door, or The Jammers. I could have easily seen a strong roster full of high-level 6’s player beating Ayylmao and possibly The Wittmen, but I’m not so confident they’ll be able to beat teams like Door or The Jammers. If they do, it will certainly shake this season up.

8. The New Generation Crew (ngc) [+1]

[Duke/m0nsta/gingi/Hedgehog Hero/DZCreeper/PapiYisus/Snake/Markers/iXton]

Last match logs: and

The New Generation Crew had the unfortunate job of finding out just how good the new Nine Angry Men roster is. Even more unfortunately for NGC, it turns out the roster is pretty good.  Shockingly, Hedgehog hero (demo, ngc) was actually able to keep up with the plat-proven rightjustify (demo, 9am). Sadly for ngc, no one on their team was able to match eerie (heavy, 9am) and he was able to tilt the match in 9am’s favor. At least Hedgehog hero can walk away from this one feeling very proud of his performance. Perhaps we’ll be seeing more of him in upcoming seasons…

9. Disingenuous Assertions (DAT) [+1]

Last match logs:

DAT’s match against Suicide Watch was…kind of a weird one. Essentially ash joined DAT, hard carried against Suicide Watch, and has now left DAT to play for Shooting Blanks. Seriously, ash had 51 frags in this match. The second highest frag count from an individual player in the match was 36 from bigtoes (scout, sw). Ash went insane and Suicide Watch just wasn’t prepared for it.

Now DAT has Dyl4n on demo, and as a result the end of their season will likely see them regulated to mid-Gold. Like galaxy swim team I think it’s still technically possible that they could make playoffs, but it would require some amazing upsets.

Last match logs: N/A (DOES IT forfeited to Ayylmao)

DOES IT forfeited their last match, so there isn’t a whole lot to talk about. Thanks for that. No seriously, writing these things every week gets kind of tiring. YOU try coming up with things to say about teams and matches every single week. No seriously, you should do that for some division that isn’t currently covered by anyone. The more tf2 articles the better!

Uh…anyway, DOES IT. I believe they’re still planning to play their last few matches, but they’ve obviously given up hope of making playoffs with their forfeit to Ayylmao. They’ll likely finish out their season at 3-5 or 4-4.

11. Tune Squad (TS) []

[Sleeping/Davidb/sous chef/Niko Jims/dobb/??/KS/sinned/sharpshot]

Last match logs: N/A (Tune Squad forfeited to galaxy swim team)

Tune Squad also forfeited their last match. It’s hard to say for certain if they’ll finish out the season. Whether they do or not they’ll probably end up near the bottom of Gold however.

12. Harambe’s Heroes (HH) [-]

[D3STRUCTION DELICIOUS/Rokkitfrog/Swifty/Boo/Butt3r/Missa/Toady/anjirocool/phorofor]

Last match logs: N/A (bye week)

Harambe’s Heroes continues their ride at the bottom, receiving a second bye week because they tried to not accept the last bye win.

Week 6 Matches

Ayylmao vs. The Slammin’ Jammers

My prediction: 2-0 JAM

Perhaps a somewhat close match, but considering the Jammers have rolled through almost all the candidates for playoffs at this point I don’t see Ayylmao being able to put up much of a fight here. Lucky (demo, Ayylmao) and rockmonkey (sniper, Ayylmao) are very good at their class, and indeed no one on Ayylmao is bad at what they play, but I just don’t think either the individual skill or the team cohesion of Ayylmao is strong enough to topple The Jammers. JJslim, mirrorman and andrew provide loads of raw dm for The Jammers and combined with the overall strong teamwork the team as a whole just seems unbeatable. If Ayylmao is the one to take down The Jammers I will be truly shocked.

Dedoris vs. Nine Angry Men

My prediction: 2-1 Door

Probably the most interesting match this week, Rightjustify (demo, 9am) and eerie (heavy, 9am) are tasked with carrying Nine Angry Men to victory against a group of other Plat capable players. The rest of 9am isn’t bad, but their match against The New Generation Crew did definitely seem to suggest that, while the rest of 9am is certainly capable of not holding rj and eerie back, they don’t have the raw dm to contest top Gold teams themselves. Vryktion (soldier, 9am) is a bit of a wildcard, as he very rarely has actually started for teams during his tf2 career. He potentially might have top Gold soldier dm, but I really don’t know. If Vryktion and Willmatic (sniper, 9am) are both able to show up well in this match this could be an entirely different story, perhaps even a win for 9am. However, considering that all of 9am would have to play their absolute best to have a shot at winning this match while Door only has to play about as well as they always do, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Door will probably win this one. 9am might have some strong plat level dm, but so does Door with players like syath (scout, Door) and zoey (sniper, Door).

EDIT: Since the original writing of this article I have been informed that catgroove (aka bigtoes) is now on scout for 9am. This should make the match potentially much closer, and makes a 9am victory more likely if Willmatic and Vrytkion are able to keep up with their counterparts on Door.

The Wittmen vs. Shooting Blanks

My prediction: 2-1 sb!

Potentially another close match, this one has a lot of importance as whoever wins it is pretty much a shoo-in for playoffs. Like I’ve said a lot of times with The Wittmen now, I don’t think they quite have the dm to make this one happen. This match should be a lot closer than their match last week against The Jammers however, and they do have the potential to win it. If triiiple remains on sniper for The Wittmen, he will be an especially valuable asset and potential game changer. Who wins the sniper duel between triiiple and Fallen Lord (sniper, sb!) could play a large part in who wins this match.

Besides the sniper duel, Shooting Blanks probably has a slight advantage dm wise. Benn and gabe on the flank of Shooting Blanks have a small advantage over dotsy and plan on The Wittmen. Ash on demo for Shooting Blanks could possibly tilt things in the favor of sb, but his performance so far this season has been somewhat inconsistent. If he plays like he did last week for DAT, then he’ll make things quite hard for The Wittmen’s combo. However, it’s hard to say exactly how well he’ll play.

Overall, this should be a close game. Either team could win, but I think Shooting Blanks would be the favorite to win it. The Wittmen very well could prove me wrong however. Hell, with how accurate I’ve been this season perhaps my prediction against them practically cements their victory.

galaxy swim team vs. DOES IT

My prediction: 2-0 gst

It’s hard to say if DOES IT will even show up for this match, considering they forfeited their match last week. Even if they do however, I think this should be a fairly easy win for galaxy swim team. Gst has overall much stronger dm, with players like phlps, rowpieces, trippa and safrix. Indeed, they appear to have the strongest iteration of their roster yet. They should make quick work of a disinterested DOES IT.

The New Generation Crew vs. Tune Squad

My prediction: 2-0 ngc

Much like DOES IT, it’s hard to say if Tune Squad will even play this one. Also like DOES IT, I think their opponent will win either way. The New Generation Crew is definitely the much more serious team of these two, which alone is enough to give them a large advantage over Tune Squad. Add on the fact that NGC has some players with very strong dm like Hedgehog hero (demo, ngc) and duke (scout, ngc), and it’s pretty safe to say they’ll take the win here.

Harambe’s Heroes vs. Disingenuous Assertions

My prediction: 2-0 DAT

Harambe’s Heroes does not look able to get a win in Gold this season. DAT should take this one easily.
